Garida Wisnu Kencana, The New Icon of Indonesia is the largest statue in Indonesia standing at a huge 397 feet!
It is located within the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park (GWK) in Ungasan, South Kuta.
The statue itself is truly breathtaking and we have been wanting to get a closer look at it's beauty ever since we first flew into Bali as you can see from the plane.
The kids could not believe their eyes as we drove into the cultural park with all the little monuments and rock formations that look like they've been cut straight in half.
The statue is devoted to the Hindu God, Vishnu and his mount Garuda, the mythical bird that became he's closest companion.
When you drive into the Cultural Park you start your journey to the top by waiting for the small buses at the waiting station that will take you to the middle of the park where you can decide to either walk or be taken via buggy to the statue. There a plenty of small boutique shops and small cafes around the middle too!
We decided to take the buggy as it was a stinker of a day and walking all the way to the top with 3 tired kiddos did not sound like fun!
Once you reach the top, you are truly shocked at how big and amazingly built the statue really is!
It seems to hit you once you're right in front of it staring up into the sky wondering where it ends. Underneath the statue is even more beauty! You can walk inside and there is an array of mythical Balinese artifacts for you to learn about as you stroll further inside. There is a cute little ice cream stall right at the end or you can be braver than me and get a lift to the top of the statue and look out across the beauty that is Bali!
All in all even though it was a relentlessly hot day it was such an eye opening experience to see some of the Balinese culture through these statues and be able to immerse ourselves with the stories that formed them.
If you're on your way to Bali and are looking for a great day out this is one has definitely got to be on your to do list!
