Homeschooling Abroad!

Updated: Dec 28, 2024

Following on with the craziness, after everything we just did and changed within our lives we decided the best thing for the kids was to keep them with me and start homeschooling. Because life isn't hard and chaotic enough, let's turn mum into a teacher while we're at it!

With Dad working FIFO (fly in, fly out) from Australia we decided it was the best way to really take advantage of our new lifestyle and be able to have the most time and experiences together. We definitely did our research into the school systems in Bali before we left Perth and it always seemed like homeschooling was the best option as most Westernised English schools here are quite expensive and some can have very long hours. Which we thought for us wasn't the right fit as one of the biggest reasons for moving overseas was for the life experience and adventure that we could all have together.

The kids and I are pretty structured and routined on the weeks that Dad is away at work. Our normal days now consist of morning play outside while the weather is cooler, morning game time/free time, lunch time, toddler nap time which is the best time for the majority of the school work and then the afternoons differ from Indonesian classes, sport classes, nature walks, arts and crafts and cooking classes.

School days at our new home are great and we absolutely love it but that doesn't mean it's all sunshine and lollipops either. Our days are crazy, chaotic, there are plenty of arguments between children and mum losing her mind just a little. But it's all part of the fun right?

We study through an Australian based curriculum which is a program the kids can see on iPads or computers, we also print off the provided worksheets so they still sit and read and write.

The kids weeks consist of English, Maths, Science, Geography, PE, Health and Art which we break up into each day and often have lessons outside incorporating things around us into our learning.

It has been an amazing experience so far even with the struggles and worry that I as a mum constantly have, from am I doing this right? Did I make the right decision? Am I smart enough for this? At the end of the day I know it was the right decision. We can now take our learning with us, wherever we go. No doubt they'll be more globetrotting in the future.

Believe me if you're thinking about homeschooling for whatever reason, just go for it! You'll never regret spending that extra time with your kids.
